There are Besson Sovereign F Tubas. Admittedly they were made as prototypes within this decade, and appear much like the Eb 983 models, but pitched in F. There were twelve of them made either in each batch or in total, i cannot remember which, but from what i have seen they do sell for less than £2000. The antique ones i know wont sell for so little; they are heavily sought after, but as for the prototypes made this decade there is one currently advertised on the mouthpiece for £2000. I have also seen one advertised a few months ago on pamelas music site for £1900. This one actually sold for £1600, and if id have had the money at the time i wouldve bought it myself. The latter had never been used except for the owners of the shop, so i do honestly expect to be able to purchase one for less if there are any out there. From what i am aware these two examples are from the second batch too, which differed from the first in that a second main tuning slide was added to try and improve intonation from the first batch. If anyone out there has one with only one main tuning slide i would only except to pay a few hundred pounds for it. The reason they sell for so little is the stigma attached to them in that they have intonation issues, which most f tubas have, and that also there is little call for them in the Uk with many tubists opting for the Eb to fit in also with the brass band tradition.

And in regard to the links in the classified forum, i have fixed the links to ebay. I have no idea why they werent working, because i posted exactly the same links on the mouthpiece and im pretty sure they worked there (but obviously now im going to have to check and/or replace them!).

And yes, i do actually play the Tuba

I have recently bought a Yamaha YBR4335S and overall am very impressed with it. The build quality is excellent, it has a really nice tone, notes slot well and the higher register seems to be a lot easier to play.

One small problem; numbers one and two valves have a tendency to be a little sluggish at times, particularly number one valve. About 70% of the time it is fine but it does tend to judder coming back up, occasionaly stopping about half way. I have cleaned the valves and casings and put slightly less oil on the valves which seems to have helped a little. Is this normal on a new trumpet and will the valve gradualy bed in (I have only played it for about two hours in total) or should I be thinking of taking it to the tech?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Mick.

I bought it from the soulo mute website and had to pay import duty.
Main reason for buying it was having a bucket like mute with a nice sound. Turns out at the moment I mainly use it when playing trumpet/cornet and my little son of 6 months is in the same room.
The mute seems to take away a bit of the sharpness of the sound so the baby is also happy with me playing

regards,
Kurt

Mouthpieces - High Brass - Switching from euph to trombone to trumpet - help!

I'd lean on him to go back to euph, and leave high brass alone. He's still in the age of "gee whiz" factor of a new instrument, instead of developing a true interest in any instrument in particular, and if you let him keep bouncing, he'll one day just get bored of playing entirely and bounce completely off.

I thought about recommending something like brass band baritone, since he has now done both euph & bone, but that would only be another "gee whiz," like the valve bone, and because the baritone horn is usually in a supporting role, he might get bored with that even more quickly.

Yes, steer him back to euph and emphasize the breadth of literature and more varied performance opportunities written for it. He'll grow into it.

There's another reason: high brass will take a complete retraining of the embouchure, and it doesn't sound like he wants to put the time into woodshedding through the frustration and delayed gratification of developing range and endurance required to sound good on high brass.

Have him review the websites by Dave Werden http://www.dwerden.com and Stephen Mead http://www.euphonium.net and look into Charlie Brighton's (who posts on this forum as Highams) recitals that are posted on line, and on his website http://www.euph9.freeserve.co.uk . These guys are the current "rock star" or "pop star" equivalents in the performance areas, and getting some familiarity with some of the leading exponents may help focus his interests as well. Check out the area brass bands and see who's giving euph recitals, or brass band concerts featuring a euph solo in the programme, and take him, so he can see in person how an advanced euph player sounds. And here's an article on this very forum about the history of the euph:

http://www.brass-forum.co.uk/Articles/HistoryoftheEuphonium.htm

As far as toting around a euph case, he'll grow into it. If he isn't interested in carrying around the instrument, no amount of changing instruments will help. Even a piccolo case would be too heavy.

Heya,

I think you have to contact Yamaha themselves, I dont think they actually publish serial numbers, largely due to the fact that two different instruments could have the same serial number, and they would have to list serial numbers and dates for every single model made if that makes sense?

Hope this helps

Bob

All,
I have returned from my visit to South Africa. I went to a couple of music shops. The biggest one was Marshall's in Cape town (I was previously told that this was one of the largest music shops in SA). It was big - and so were the prices (compared to the UK). Also, they had a few trumpets, but the best one that they had was perhaps an intermediate horn. Also, they only had two mouth pieces to try!

The staff were friendly and helpful though

I am beginning to think that I need to go over to the states if I ever want to try out on of the horns, but it's a lot of effort!

Jericho.
