Tuba Manufacturer's Websites
05/02/05 at 18:01:49

In looking for a new tuba, I saw several "lists" of tuba manufacturer's websites, but they were all either incomplete, the links had changed, or not descriptive. So, after a couple of months of surfing and searching, here is my list, with personally verified links. I do not have specialty shops on here, like Mr. Tuba, but have limited myself to manufacturers, or where manufacturers could not be found, a distributor. Also, where there may have been confusion with distributors vs manufacturers, I tried to clarify and cross-reference. You may see edits, as this has been transferred from word processing, there may be formatting glitches I have to fix. Finally, please help me keep this list current. In surfing and researching, there is nothing more frustrating than a broken link. OK, here goes, it's long:

Probably the best thing to do is www.yamaha.com and suffer through

Or you could have used the Brass-Forum instrument manufacturer links page http://www.brass-forum.co.uk/Links/Instruments.htm

All the links work!

Thanks. Of course, I started researching this list before I found the forum, and when I first looked at the links page, I'm not sure all of them were on there, as all fora are works in process. I guess I just never checked back. In addition, I wanted just tuba websites, not all instrument websites, because as I surfed and compared I did waste some time looking through sites that did not manufacture tubas, (there are about two trumpet websites for every tuba website) or had ceased manufacturing tubas. Maybe we can break down that part of the links page by instrument, as you have done with the forum and the links page in general, so people looking for sites relating to a particular horn as well as a general topic can be helped along a little. And, of course, there are important sources like the Couesnon factory, makers of the most popular fluegelhorn of the 1950's and 1960's and are hanging on with fourteen people, or the tuba master Walter Nirschl, who have no website of their own, but are invaluable, and must not get lost merely because they lack a cyberspace address.

And here are some mouthpiece makers to add to your links list:
http://www.kellymouthpieces.com (popular mouthpiece sizes, including DW 4B, in Lexan
http://www.sparxmusic.com (cornet mouthpieces and accessories)
http://www.dillonmusic.com (This store has its own line of brass mouthpieces for a range of instruments, as well as custom mouthpieces made in house by Vladimir Fridman (Formerly custom mouthpiece designer of Giardinelli's and Jerome Callet)
Thanks again.

You may also find the TubaNews website useful - http://www.tubanews.com/instrumentshome.html

I reference it regularly.  It also has links.

Jonathan Tuba - Thanks.

I looked in on tubanews.com and found a company I had missed:

Thein

However, not all of their links seem to be working!

The links to King now work. Open up the home page and pull the products menu to get to the instruments.

The links to Thein now work as well. Same thing: open up the homepage and go to the left menus.

Willson has changed their European website:
home:            http://www.swissprofi.ch/willson/index.php
The instruments page is the same:
T E:            http://www.swissprofi.ch/willson/instr.html
As has been noted in another thread, Willson is developing a cornet. But that is not all. They are developing an entire brass band instrument line, including compensating baritones and tenor horns with a trigger to tune valve combinations.

Mark Carter, doing business as Mr. Tuba, http://www.netupandgo.com/mrtuba/ has a new line of Eb and BBb compensating basses built by Melton/Meinl-Weston to his specs for brass banding. There is an excellent review comparing his new tubas to the current Bessons at Tuba News, http://www.tubanews.com/articles/contentid-200.html which every tubist/bassist who does any brass banding should read.

I just ran across this one on eBay:
http://www.themachiavelli.com
Click on purchase on the left side under the clarinet for your instrument choice. The tuba looks very clean in design, like a King or Jupiter copy or derivative. The eBay listing says .687 bore and 18" bell.

They appear to be a contract brand, as this is at the bottom of the main screen:
Machiavelli is a subsidiary of Next Wave Marketing, Inc. All rights reserved.

Of course, the pictures are of "old world" craftsman style. But, I wonder which Asian factory with good hydraulics is really making them? Anybody else heard of them?

Getzen is known for their "Canadian Brass" model tuba, which I find rather curious that the thumb trigger "long whole step" valve is in the leadpipe rather than at the end of the valve block, so I don't know, never having played one, what this does to playability, but I don't know if it is being made now. It is not listed on their website, but that does not necessarily mean anything. Maybe a special order? I'll keep looking.
