Warburton's PETE embouchure exerciser

http://www.warburton-usa.com/index.php/products/accessories/36-accessories/190-P...

I wondered if anyone here uses the PETE?  I did a search on the forum but couldn't find any mention.

Seems to make sense and get good reviews from a range of players.

Do you think it might be a good investment?

What do others do to achieve the effects claimed without buying this device?

Does anyone in the UK sell it?

Thanks.

Won't a pencil do the same thing for £39 less?

I am wary of embouchure exercisers. Yes, like freeweights in a gym, they can be useful to build strength and mass, but aren't we more concerned about flexibility and endurance? Misused, they can cause more harm by exercising the embouchure the wrong way and sacrifice flexibility.

The aspect that concerns me most is that what brass players need most, firm corners of the embouchure in order to help everything else work properly, does not seem to be what these appliances exercise best. They seem to exercise the middle of the embouchure, which can lead to a false sense of security without working properly on the corners of the embouchure.

iiipopes, from looking at the videos on Warburtons' site, the PETE seems to work on the area running down from where the soft part of the nose begins to the outer edges of the lips, and appears to me in my limited knowledge to affect the sides of the embouchure.

pman mentions a pencil, but a pencil doesn't have the disc that you place your lips around and then try to pull the PETE out from between.  There's nothing to grip there.

Philip, maybe you can enlighten us?  Are you selling many, do you use it yourself, what effect has it had on you?

In the three weeks or so I've had them on our site I've sold a couple, I haven't really tried one out over a period of time yet although a seasoned teacher has told me that many years ago he had his pupils put a small button on a thread to produce a similar exercise.

Thanks for the reply. My main point is that I'm not sure that is an appropriate exercise for developing embouchure.

I bought one of these a couple of months ago actually, from the US.  I cant really comment on its efficacy though.  I only used it intermittently and as an inexperienced player can't place it's affect, if any.  In any case, it would be so easy to replicate the object at home.  I would think a tea spoon with bends in the right places would do the trick.

Fresh Chicken, (locally sourced I hope), I'm trying to visualise your teaspoon with appropriate bends.  Could you draw a picture?  Grin
